the big picture

"Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Matthew 28:19-20

These are the last words of Jesus to his disciples in Matthew's gospel account.

Maybe we were brought to the waters of baptism as an infant, maybe we came as adults. But baptized into Christ, we set out anew on the journey of life with a new identity and a fresh purpose. We don't travel alone. Like a family road trip, we go together. And God (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) goes with us.

As we go, we continue to learn from Jesus. He teaches us to trust God. He teaches us we're children of God. He teaches us to see the world in a new way. He teaches us we're forgiven and loved. He teaches us to rest. He teaches us so much more. Let's go to him and learn from the Author of Life.

the people of advent

Advent is a group of people who have set out on this journey together. This year marks Advent's 25th birthday. It all started in 1992, when several people from St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Bel Air had a goal to reach out and share Christ's love to families with young children in a growing part of Harford County. Advent continues to do this through our Child Development Center.

Each Sunday, we gather in Christ-centered worship, which strengthens us for living out our baptismal identity as disciples of Jesus. We would love to meet you and get to know you.

the pastor

I was born and baptized in northwestern Montana. My parents served in ministry at Camp Luther in Nebraska and Camp CILCA in Illinois. These places gave me the perfect environment to explore my faith (and hundreds of acres of forest). After finishing my undergraduate studies at Valparaiso University in Indiana, I enrolled in classes at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri. I served in a yearlong ministry internship in urban Baltimore before graduation. In August of 2016 I began to serve as Advent's pastor. I enjoy board gaming in the colder months and kayaking in the warmer months. Also, ask me about my cathedral-building project.
